"I think it's safe to say that none of us are too keen on getting back into one of those pods."
Upworth to Chris Oram (from Alien: Covenant)

Upworth was a communications officer aboard the Weyland-Yutani Corporation colony ship USCSS Covenant and the wife of fellow communications officer Ricks. During the Covenant's disastrous voyage to Origae-6, Upworth and her husband were killed by a dangerous alien creature that had infected security chief Dan Lopé.

Biography[]

Covenant under siege[]

As of 2103, Upworth was employed alongside husband Ricks as a communications officer aboard the Weyland-Yutani Corporation colony ship USCSS Covenant. She was present on the ship's bridge with Ricks when a shuttle piloted by a radical group bent on halting the launch of the Covenant was flown at the vessel on a suicide run. She and Ricks attempted to contact the shuttle, but their inquiries were rebuffed. The attack was ultimately foiled after chief terraformist Katherine Daniels proposed using one of the expedition's dropships, Lander Two, to intercept the onrushing craft and pilot Tennessee Faris was able to remotely launch it.

Following the successful launch of the Covenant from Earth orbit, the crew held a celebration before preparing to enter stasis. During the festivities, Upworth choked on a mouthful of food; she was saved by ship's synthetic Walter, who struck her on the back and dislodged the blockage.

One year into the voyage in 2104, the Covenant was rocked by a cosmic event that inflicted serious damage. Upworth and most of the crew were revived from stasis, though Branson was killed when his pod failed to open and caught fire. Upworth was particularly affected by this; following the detection of a nearby planet from a rogue transmission intercepted by Tennessee, she mentioned to newly-promoted captain Chris Oram that going back into stasis was the less preferable option to investigating the new world.

Oram organized a detachment to inspect the planet; Upworth, Ricks, and Tennessee were to remain on the bridge in orbit and monitor the situation while the ground team explored. Some time into the expedition, the bridge received garbled, panicked calls from Lander One sent by pilot Maggie Faris concerning the condition of guard Ben Ledward. Cognizant of the probability that his wife was in danger, Tennessee demanded a clearer signal; grappling with adverse atmospheric conditions, Upworth retorted that his manner was counterproductive. Upworth and Tennesse continued to argue as contact with the ground team was lost.

Eventually, security chief Dan Lopé and guard Cole were able to establish a signal. Daniels chimed in, ordering Tennessee to use the ship's cargo lift to rescue her and the other survivors of a recent incident on the planet. Upworth and Ricks assisted Tennessee in modifying the lift for a rapid insertion, though they were forced to abandon their efforts when Daniels urged them to launch immediately. Tennessee was successful in securing the survivors, by now reduced to Daniels, Lopé and Walter.

Deadly shower[]

With little else to do, Upworth and Ricks took a shower together. Unbeknownst to Daniels and Walter, however, Lopé had been implanted with a dangerous alien creature that erupted from his chest. Maturing quickly, the alien infiltrated the shower room and attacked Ricks from behind, impaling him through the throat with its inner jaw. Drenched in her husband's blood by the assault, Upworth was helpless to act as the creature killed her. Her dissociated remains, along with Ricks', were found by Tennessee and Daniels; their loss galvanized Daniels to defeat the lifeform, and she was successful in doing so.

Personality and traits[]

"Y'know, if we could save as much high-energy alcohol as you consume, we could power the ship's systems for an extra cycle."
Upworth to Tennessee (from Alien: Covenant novelization)

Upworth had a bombastic and sarcastic personality which was grounded somewhat by her husband Ricks' calmer demeanor. Her temperament did not go unnoticed by other members of the crew; at one point, pilot Tennessee had described Upworth as "a high explosive disguised as a Kewpie doll". Upworth was also mildly claustrophobic, which should have disqualified her from a position aboard the Covenant; however, she lied on the application form, reasoning that such a condition would not cause her any distress in hypersleep.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

"She's a bit of a firecracker. She's funny. It's kind of weird because you don't really get to know the characters before chaos ensues."

Upworth was portrayed by Callie Hernandez.
