The Furious Gods: Making Prometheus is a 2012 documentary directed by Charles de Lauzirika that details the production of the 2012 film Prometheus. Created exclusively for the Prometheus: Collector's Edition Blu-ray, it uses extensive interviews with the film's cast and crew, as well as a wealth of behind the scenes footage and imagery, to examine all aspects of the development, filming and release of the movie.

The documentary can be seen as something of a companion piece to the four exhaustive making-of documentaries Lauzirika previously created for the first four films in the Alien franchise, sharing a similar style and format.

Overview[]

The documentary is divided into nine separate chapters, each dealing with a different aspect of the Prometheus' production. As with Charles de Lauzirika's documentaries on the films in the Alien series, it features no formal narration but instead relies on interview clips to tell the story of the film's development, interspersed with behind-the-scenes footage and images.

Conquest of Paradise: Renewing the Story[]

The first chapter covers the lengthy process of developing a new entry in the Alien franchise, highlighting the many drafts that the film's script went through (including the Alien: Engineers draft) and the way the movie ultimately evolved from direct Alien prequel to the start of a new side-series.

Includes interviews with director Ridley Scott, writers Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof, producer Michael Ellenberg, production designer Arthur Max, and visual effects director Steven Messing.

Under the Pyramid: LV-223[]

The second chapter covers the film's collaborative conceptual design process, focussing in particular on the designing of the planet LV-223, including how the artists involved were initially opposed to the humanoid redesign of the Engineers proposed by Ridley Scott. The segment also looks at the evolution of the film's creature design, which is fleshed out in it's own section later in the documentary.

Includes interviews with Ridley Scott, Michael Ellenberg, actress Noomi Rapace, conceptual artists Carlos Huante, Ben Procter, David Levy and Neville Page, Arthur Max, Steven Messing, and creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan.

Reverse Engineering: USCSS Prometheus[]

The third chapter covers the design of the Prometheus itself — from the functional aspects of spaceflight to the technology of the interiors — along with the transport vehicles and ATVs it carries.

Includes interviews with Ridley Scott, Ben Procter, David Levy, Arthur Max, Steven Messing, and artist Steve Burg.

The Human Manifest: Casting and Costumes[]

The fourth chapter covers the casting of the main actors, discussing their characters and how the actors became involved with the film. It also looks at the rationale behind the characters' outfits, and touches on the extensive costume tests needed to find Elizabeth Shaw's look.

Includes interviews with Ridley Scott, Damon Lindelof, Michael Ellenberg, actors Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron and Kate Dickie, director of photography Dariusz Wolski, and costume designer Janty Yates.

A World Without Green: Pinewood Studios, 2011[]

The fifth chapter covers filming at Pinewood Studios, including Ridley Scott's determination to create as much of the film practically as possible, the vast sets that were built as a result, and the need to extend Pinewood's famous 007 Stage by over 30% to accommodate them. The process of shooting in 3D is also examined, from the intricate wiring and more complicated workflow to the temperamental camera rigs.

Includes interviews with Ridley Scott, Damon Lindelof, producers Michael Ellenberg and Mark Huffam, actors Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron, Rafe Spall, Emun Elliott, Benedict Wong and Kate Dickie, Arthur Max, Dariusz Wolski, assistant director Max Keene, Neal Scanlan, special effects supervisor Trevor Wood, and Janty Yates.

Demons in the Dark: Creature Design[]

The sixth chapter goes deeper into the design of the film's creatures, showing the on-set, practical aspects of bringing the monsters to life using cable technology and old-fashioned movie tricks. In particular, it focuses on the filming of the Hammerpede sequences and the movie's signature emergency cesarean scene.

Includes interviews with Ridley Scott, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall, Kate Dickie and Ian Whyte, Max Keene, Neal Scanlan, and prosthetic supervisor Conor O'Sullivan.

Hazard Pay: Stunts and Action[]

The seventh chapter covers the film's stunt work and action scenes, particularly the immolation of Holloway, the Fifield attack sequence (including details on the original all-CGI version of the creature) and the final fight between Shaw and the Last Engineer (ultimately cut from the movie).

Includes interviews with Ridley Scott, Michael Ellenberg, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron, Arthur Max, Max Keene, Trevor Wood, and stunt coordinator Rob Inch.

Fire from the Sky: Visual Effects[]

The eighth chapter covers the digital effects work carried out by Weta Workshop and others, from the decomposition of the Sacrifice Engineer at the beginning of the film to the creation of a CGI Prometheus, as well as the digital effects use to realise the various alien landscapes and creatures.

Includes interviews with Ridley Scott, visual effects supervisors Matt Sloan, Richard Stammers, Martin Hill and Charley Henley, and effects artists Allen Maris, Ferran Domenech, Florian Fernandez and Joan Panis.

Prometheus Unbound: Post-Production and Release[]

The final chapter covers the film's post-production, including the editing process, the decision to go for an R-rating, and the film's score and sound mix. Finally, after looking at the intense fan anticipation in the lead up to the movie's release, the cast and crew share their own thoughts on the film.

Includes interviews with Ridley Scott, Jon Spaihts, Damon Lindelof, Michael Ellenberg, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron, Arthur Max, Max Keene, editor Pietro Scalia, Neal Scanlan, composer Marc Streitenfeld, conductor Ben Foster, and sound mixers Mark P. Stoeckinger, D. M. Hemphill and Ron Bartlett.

Enhancement Pods[]

Alongside the documentary, the Prometheus: Collector's Edition Blu-ray also included several "Enhancement Pods", essentially deleted scenes from The Furious Gods. These cover a wide range of topics, many of which are already mentioned in the documentary itself, and provide additional detail and trivia.

As well as individuals featured in the main documentary, the Enhancement Pods contain additional interviews with Patrick Wilson, Anil Biltoo, Felix Crawshaw, Paul Butterworth, Anders Thonell, Simone Riginelli, Sam Cole, Sonja Klaus, Guy Scott and Ben Rowland.
