Aliens: Renegade, originally titled Renegade, is a two-part comic book short story that was first published by Dark Horse Comics in the company's self-titled anthology series Dark Horse Comics #1-2, from August-September 1992. It was written by Chris Claremont, illustrated by Vince Giarrano, colored by Gregory Wright, lettered by Tom Orzechowski, and edited by Diana Schutz and Jerry Prosser. The issue of Dark Horse Comics also featured a double-gatefold cover by Dave Dorman. The comic serves as a prequel to the 12-issue series Aliens vs. Predator: Deadliest of the Species.

In Dark Horse's Aliens comics line, Aliens: Renegade was preceded by the movie adaptations Aliens: Newt's Tale and Alien3, and was followed by Aliens: Horror Show.

Plot[]

A peaceful, distant colony world settlement is visited by mercenaries, Commanding officer Javier Milan, Executive Officer Moira Delgado of the Descartes Indigenous Self-Defense Forces, who threaten to take over the entire planet. The leader of the colony, Caleb Deschanel, sends a woman named Ash Parnall, aka Renegade, to deal with the outsiders.

Reprint History[]

After its initial publication under the original title Renegade, the comic received its current title, Aliens: Renegade, when it was serialized and reprinted in the United Kingdom in 2 parts in Aliens magazine, Vol. 2 #18-19, from December 1993-January 1994, but otherwise has never been collected or reissued.

Behind the Scenes[]

There is generally some confusion as to Renegade's place as an Aliens or Aliens vs. Predator story, since no actual Aliens, Predators or references to either franchise appear in the story itself. However, the lead character of Ash Parnall is one of the main characters mentioned in the subsequent Aliens vs. Predator: Deadliest of the Species series, appearing in a number of flashbacks. The story's place in the Aliens line was further established by its eventual reprinting as "Aliens: Renegade" in Aliens magazine in the UK.

Unusually, the copyright to the story is retained by creators Chris Claremont and Vincent Giarrano, as opposed to 20th Century Studios or Dark Horse. This may be why the comic has never been reprinted in the United States. As such, Aliens: Renegade is one of very few Aliens stories that have never been reprinted in North America, alongside other similarly rare UK Aliens magazine-only comics like Aliens: Countdown, the incomplete Aliens: Crusade, and the unreleased Aliens: Matrix.

Trivia[]

  • Dave Dorman's cover art for issue 1 of Dark Horse Comics is one of the most reused pieces of cover art in the Predator comics franchise, having also been used on Dark Horse Insider, Vol. 2 #8 and Total Carnage #5.
