The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is the police department of the city of Los Angeles, California. With just over 10,000 officers and more than 3,000 civilian staff, covering an area of an area of 498 square miles (1,290 km2) with a population of more than 3.8 million people, it is the third largest local law enforcement agency in the United States, after the police departments of New York and Chicago.
During a heatwave in 1997, the LAPD became involved in the gang war between the Colombian Scorpions and the Jamaican Voodoo Posse, resulting in the the deaths of numerous officers.
