General Thomas A. W. "Tommy" Spears[1] was a member of the United States Colonial Marine Corps in charge of a Military Facility in the 2190s. His direct subordinate at his facility was Major Powell. Spears headed a project to turn Xenomorph Drones into an organized fighting force to reclaim Earth.

Biography[]

Early life[]

"Born" in the earlier half of the 22nd century, Thomas "Tommy" A.W. Spears was an artificial womb human, part of a project within the United States Colonial Marine Corps to bolster their ranks. Spears was raised in military training facilities with the sole purpose to serve in the Corps. In his early childhood Spears was bullied by an older cadet by the name of Jerico Axe. At age nine while hiding from Axe Spears got a hold of a knife to defend himself from Jerico and ambushed the older and larger boy. After subduing Jerico, Spears then killed the older boy and would be proud of the moment when he killed his first enemy well into his later life, showcasing his sociopathic personality.

By age fifteen, Spears was proving himself to be a competent cadet and showing promise as a Marine in the near future, even sporting several tattoos relating to the Corps. Around this time, cadet Spears found himself attracted to his small arms instructor Gunnery Sergeant Brandywine, who was twice Spears' age. Brandywine, aware of the cadet's attraction called him out on it when they were alone and told him to meet her in her quarters. Spears and Brandywine had a brief sexual encounter that still had an impact on Spears many years later, lamenting how he wished Brandywine could see him then.

So-called savior of Earth[]

General Spears was considered on the short list to the next Secretary General. He was a man of honor and distinction; unfortunately, he was also a relic. He commanded his armies with an iron fist. Spears was the first to promote a CMC Bio-Weapon’s Division and started one of his own secret projects when the aliens appeared. He kept his experiments quiet at first: his secret agenda was to harness the Aliens and control their behavior. When the war broke out at CL5, Spears set up station off-world, outside a local Hive and ran his army into the underground, experimenting on the Aliens trying to control their mannerisms. His experiments obsessed him and he was vicious with punishment to his men that harmed them. Unfortunately for him, he and his ideals were both killed when he attempted to release trained Aliens back on Earth to destroy their brothers. They disobeyed him and he shot at them, the Queen then lifted him up and tore his head off. Both him and his legacy vanished in the blink of an eye.

Personality and traits[]

Thomas Spears was by all accounts a sociopath. Even in his early childhood Thomas was brutal, getting hold of a knife and killing his bully, Jerico. While it was understandable someone would lash out like that, especially at such a young age, Thomas was proud of the murder and thought of it as some sort of great "achievement" as his first kill showing no remorse for his actions. He was intensely loyal to the Corps, getting several tattoos at age 15 and showing promise for his future as a soldier. When he finally reached the rank of General his methods of commanding those under him was ruthless, even threatening to hang someone if what they were delivering was damaged. He cared little for anything else other than his Bio-weapon division completely ignoring the danger of experimenting on the Xenomorphs more interested in redirecting that danger to enemies of the USCM. The only person that Spears ever seemed to genuinely like, or, even love, was his instructor Sergeant Brandywine, lamenting that she would be at least 80 years old when he reached the rank of General, wishing that she could see him now and he could see her one more time.

Trivia[]

  • The manner in which Spears dies differs between comic and novel adaptation; in the comic, the Queen kills him with a Headbite before they are both engulfed by the fire from his flamethrower, but in the book she instead tears his head off with her claws.
  • The letters "A. W." stands for Artifical Womb.
