"After that, i'd do it for Jill. I'd do it because Chris is a civilian in danger. I'd do it because we never leave a man behind. I'd do it because...we're USCM, and we made some kinda pledge about a zillion years ago that ought to mean something. How many more reasons do you want?"
Roth on returning to LV-223 (from Aliens: Life and Death)

Sergeant Roth was a member of the United States Colonial Marine Corps. He was part of a 31-Marine platoon under the command of Captain Paget, aboard the combat ship Hasdrubal that landed on the planet LV-797, kick-starting a massive series of events that led to an all out battle for survival against a clan of Yautja, mutated Xenomorphs and the godlike Engineers.

Roth was notably one of the few survivors of the disastrous operation.

Biography[]

Before the drop[]

Within the flight deck of the Hasdrubal, Captain Paget informed Roth and the platoon on their mission: to investigate LV-797, nicknamed Tartarus, a Wey-Yu-purchased planet under suspicion of illegal prospecting by rival corporations, specifically Seegson.

Paget informed the crew of Wey-Yu representative Lorimer's presence and told them to make a good impression, specifically refraining from any foul-language and trigger-fingers, telling the crew that "this isn't Lightholme". Roth later explained to Lorimer that Lightholme was the squad's previous operation, in which two allies were lost. Since then, the squad had been "a little gun happy". He also told him that they should have recouped and resupplied but instead were dispatched to this mission instead. Lorimer asked if Paget was worried about them being too tired to fight, with Roth correcting him that the squad were too eager.

Exploring the planet[]

Two Marine dropships detached from the Hasdrubal and land on Tartarus, with Paget splitting the platoon up into two squads. While exploring the terrain, Roth, Delaria Jhalil and Freebody come across a large ruin of a tractor unit. The group suddenly encountered Seegson asset-stripper Laurence Goode, who warned the Marines that they never should have come to the planet.

Roth contacted Paget about Goode, the former of which had recently encountered a lone Engineer Juggernaut. The Marines all regrouped at the excavation site, with Goode explaining that his crew were slaughtered by unknown assailants. Roth told Goode that his actions would result in a 6 year penalty, though Goode happily embraced the sentence as long as he was able to leave the planet. Paget ordered Roth's squad to search for any remnants of Goode's crew. Roth split the squad up and sent Delaria to sweep the right, and Stefopoulos, Lee, Rucker and Bonito, the left.

Paget later contacted Roth and informed him of three missing marines, Chimo, Garland and Herrman. After hearing gunfire, Roth and his squad find Rucker completely surrounded by a clan of Predators. They opened fire and sent the hunters into a retreat. Rucker explained that the Predators ambushed his group and slaughtered them, though Roth was suspicious of the cause of Lee's death.

Plan to secure the derelict[]

With Roth's squad reuniting with Paget, recovered survivor Melville explained to the Marines that the hunters seemed to be treating the ship as an artefact, and that they were protecting it from invaders, wishing to recover it's secrets for themselves. Roth confronted Rucker, telling him that he knew he had kiled Lee. Rucker remorsefully admitted that she accidentally got in his line of fire after trying to shoot down a cloaked Predator. Roth ultimately decided to believe Ruckers story and refrain from telling Paget on the notion that Rucker stays level-headed in the forthcoming operation.

Paget decided to send Sergeant Roth and his team consisting of Jhalil, Freebody, Rucker, Singer, Wearing and others into one of their dropships to fly over to the Engineer ship and secure the interior whilst Paget's team approached the vessel by foot, attempting to sweep the forest using M314 Motion Trackers to flush out the hunters. However, the Elder Cracked Tusk Predator ambushed the dropship and managed to crash it. As the dropship crashed near the quarters of the Juggernaut, Rucker managed to wound the Cracked Tusk Predator, and caused it to flee. Roth's squad entered the interior of the derelict and eventually reach the cockpit, containing a sarcophagus-like object. Singer suggested that he would be able to get the vessel operational and have the ship leave Tartarus and abandon the Predators.

The Cracked Tusk Predator, unbeknownst to the other Marines, was observing them within the derelict and called for the Predators who were battling Paget's crew to retreat back to the vessel to stop them from lifting it. The Cracked Tusk Predator ambushed the squad a second time, but was finally killed by Captain Humble after gunning it down with a Pulse Rifle. Singer managed to get the ship operational, intending to send it to the nearest USCM facility, Ganymede station.

Sergeant Roth scorned Humble for using a firearm, but Humble reassured the Sergeant, the two not noticing that Humble's crossfire had awakened the Engineer from within the Sarcophacus-like object.

Awakening the Engineer[]

Singer was busy attempting to establish comms with the Hasdrubal whilst the other Marines wait and discussed matters. One Marine, Indelicato, inspected the sarcophagus against Roth's wishes. The sarcophagus suddenly opened, and the Engineer emerged. Roth pointed his Pulse rifle at it, but Singer stopped him in hopes of establishing contact peacefully. As Indelicato cautiously approached the being, the Engineer suddenly crushed his head, sending the Marines into a retreat after their weaponry had no effect on it. They were forced to hide as the Engineer began taking control of the ship, directing it to a different destination.

Landing on LV-223[]

"You're the only survivors of your mission?"
"That's right. We came here to recover a previous mission. Found the Engineer site and a planet overrun with bugs. Our exit options reduced to zero. Survival has become our only path.

Ahab Marines

Ahab reveals himself to the Marines.

Six days later, the vessel landed on the moon LV-223. The Marines promptly walked out of the vessel after the Engineer left and was out of sight. Roth immediately ordered his squad to set out for shelter, food and water. The group later encountered a small lake of black liquid in a forest, with Singer concluding that their entire surroundings were made up of the black goo. Roth hoped that if they found a water source, the liquid could be extracted from the substance, otherwise the group had little chance of survival.

The Marines were suddenly ambushed by a horde of Xenomorphs, resulting in Rucker being taken and Jhalil wounded by acid blood. As the group were close to being overrun, they were saved by Geryon survivors Angela Foster and Galgo Helder. The Predator Ahab later revealed himself to the group too, much to Roth and his squad's shock and bemusement at seeing a non-hostile Yautja.

Roth and the team regrouped at Foster's base, where they also met fellow Geryon survivors Chris and Jill. Roth revealed to the group their story as they ate, and that they were betting on Paget and the Hasdrubal rescuing them. Roth would later discuss the nature of the Engineers and black liquid with Foster. After Galgo reported that the Engineer had visited a temple to reawaken a Second Engineer from stasis to kill them, the team formulated a plan to leave the moon.

Angela planned for Ahab and Galgo to distract the second Engineer whilst Angela, Roth, Singer and Humble go to the derelict to deal with the first Engineer. The rest of the team, Wearing, Freebody, Chris, Jill, and Melville are to carry the supplies, as well as the wounded Jhalil.

Roth and his team approached the derelict from a distance, the Engineer lingering nearby. Roth eventually volunteered to distract it, getting closer and firing a grenade. The Engineer took the bait and approached the temple, giving the rest the opportunity to sneak into the Juggernaut, but not before noticing Roth and firing at him. The Engineer entered the ship and lifted it, unaware that the others sneaked aboard, stranding Roth.

Stranded[]

Roth, disappointed by the outcome of the plan, was left constantly trying to contact the others. He eventually received contact from Freebody who informed Roth that they were ambushed by Xenomorphs, resulting in Wearing's death and Chris being taken to a hive. Roth later managed to regroup with Freebody, Melville and Jill. Roth discussed the chances of survivability with Freebody, the latter remarking that it wouldn't be much of a "last stand". Suddenly, an APC arrived at their junction. To the Marine's relief, the vehicle's drivers emerged to be Captain Paget and Ancane, who had finally caught up with the Juggernaut. Roth embraced Paget, and the group returned to the Hasdrubal.

Rescuing Chris[]

Back at the ship, Roth confirmed to the Marines that Chris has been left behind on LV-223, and wanted to return to the moon. Ancane was reluctant, citing the amount of losses received. Roth believed that no man should be left behind and that they owed Chris. Against better judgement, Paget briefed the remaining eighteen Marines in her platoon that they were launching a "volunteer only" rescue mission back on the moon.

The squad landed back on the moon and began exploring the terrain. Roth managed to contact Chris via headset and informed her of her rescue, though Chris dismissed the rescue, citing that she had been impregnated with a Queen, and that they should abort the mission. Suddenly, Roth and the squad were ambushed by a horde of Xenomorphs, and later the second Engineer, suffering devastating losses. Despite the situation seeming futile, the squad managed to retrieve Chris after the hive's current Queen erupted from the ground and assaulted the Engineer, impaling it with her tail. In the ensuing chaos, they returned to their dropship, only to see it in ruins (previously destroyed by the Engineer). Paget attempted to contact the Hasdrubal, but with no reply, unaware that the Tartarus Predator clan had boarded the ship and slaughtered all remaining crewmembers on board.

Stand-off at the temple[]

"What are they doing here?"
"If I said the words "they tracked us here," would the concept scare you as much as it does me?
"
Paget and Roth (from Alien vs. Predator: Life and Death)

As Paget concluded that they had lost contact with the ship, the group decided to retreat back to the Engineer temple that Roth and his squad initially encountered, although Roth was initially against the idea. The squad returned to the temple to set up camp and waited for one of the Hasdrubal's automatic freight buses to pick them up.

The Tartarus Predator clan soon arrived on the moon, seeking revenge from their previous encounter with the Marines. After a confrontation between Ahab and the clan leader, the clan sided themselves with the Marines against an upcoming army of Xenomorphs approaching the temple, hellbent on retrieving Chris. The Marines and Predators both put up a tremendous effort against the Xenomorph army, but their numbers began dwindling, the Alien horde seeping through. In a last ditch effort, Chris sacrificed herself by blowing herself up, alongside the Queen inside of her, sending the Xenomorphs into a retreat.

The Second Engineer is finally killed.

Ahab and the Tartarus clan took their leave, whilst the Marines waited at noon for the freight bus to arrive. Roth noticed a noise in the horizon, but Paget discloses the sound, unaware that the Second Engineer had survived its encounter with the Queen.

Later, the squad was attacked by the Engineer, and they were forced to retreat inside the temple. Jill suggested using the Engineer's black goo against it, and the rest helped her grab an ampule and poured it over the hallway where they first entered. The Engineer arrived and stepped on the liquid. The liquid reacted aggressively to it's bio-suit, giving Paget the opportunity to gun down the Engineer for good.

The group all finally managed to return to the Hasdrubal using the freight bus, and they prepared to enter crystasis for a twenty-three week return trip to Earth.

Personality and Traits[]

Though Roth was oftentimes a stern Sergeant, he also had a jovial side to him and would joke with his crew, specifically Jhalil. He, like Paget, also cared for the welfare of his crew; he consoled with a grieving Rucker following his accidental killing of Lee, and he was the only one to advocate to return to LV-223 to rescue Chris, whom the platoon was forced to abandon.
