The Auto Assault-12 (AA-12), originally designed and known as the Atchisson Assault Shotgun, is an American-made fully automatic combat shotgun chambered for 12 gauge cartridges. It was developed in 1972 by Maxwell Atchisson and was the basis of several later weapons, including the USAS-12 combat shotgun. Although the weapon operates in fully automatic only, the relatively low cyclic rate of 300 rounds per minute enables the shooter to fire in a de facto semi-automatic fashion with brief trigger pulls.

Overview

The AA-12 uses an advanced recoil system that means the user feels only around 10% of the recoil typically felt from firing a 12 gauge cartridge. As a result, it is possible to fire the weapon on fully-automatic without a significant reduction in accuracy, at least at the closer ranges where shotguns are typically employed. Its design includes significant tolerances, intended to allow the weapon to operate reliably without cleaning for an extended period of time.

Notable Users

Royce carried an AA-12 as his weapon of choice, both before and during his time on the Game Preserve Planet. His weapon was fitted with a drum magazine loaded with Frag-12 explosive shells, a tan SureFire M910A vertical foregrip WeaponLight and a customized camouflage paint scheme. The custom camouflage job appears to be similar to the United States Army's pixelized UCP pattern.

Fireteam Voodoo may carry the AA-12 (designated as the CS-12) as a high-level shotgun, though in stock configuration without any camouflage job.

Trivia

• The AA-12 gained attention through its use in the films G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Predators and, perhaps most famously, The Expendables films (where it is used by Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger).

A close-up of Royce's AA-12. At this angle, the "custom camo paint" on his AA-12 appears to be ACU CAMO Form carefully wrapped around the weapon. You can see how the form creates sharp angles and is also peeling a bit around the ejection port. Also, the form creases down a bit where the rounded edges should be on either side.
