Hyperdyne Systems, later known as Hyperdyne Corporation, was a synthetic manufacturer responsible for pioneering the development of synthetic technology and cybernetic prosthetics in the early 22nd century. In the middle of the 22nd century, Hyperdyne also began to design weapons, and took the mantle of main weapon designer for the Union of Progressive Peoples after the Hyades Revolts.

Hyperdyne's products included the 341-B model of androids developed by lead designer Michael Bishop, and the 120-A/2. Hyperdyne did not manufacture any of their weapon designs; rather, instead of shipping manufactured weapons that would likely take months to reach their customers, Hyperdyne sent fabrication blueprints and ballistics software over FTL hyperstate to allow the receiver to "print" the relevant weapon using local maintenance-part fabricators.

History[]

Early activities[]

In the early 22nd century, Hyperdyne Systems[a 1] worked with the United Americas to launch several large-scale colonization missions,[1] with one such expedition dispatched aboard the colony ship Concordat to colonize the Hyades Cluster.[2] During the establishment of the 20 Parsec Limit in 2110 following a rash of lost colonies, Hyperdyne refused to abandon the Hyades Cluster and resolved to independently support their mining interests in that locale.[3]

Synthetic design[]

In 2120, as the original Weyland Corp patent on synthetics expired, Hyperdyne rushed to create their own synthetics,[2] and was the first manufacturer to offer synthetic models with a non-standardized appearance for the purpose of clandestine operations. However, one of their first models, the 120-A/2, borrowed much of the early Weyland David 7 and 8 models' synaptic algorithms, and as such displayed neurotic and unstable behavior. This led to a raft of problems that forced the 120-A/2 to be recalled and refurbished by the end of the decade. To avoid lawsuits concerning the 120-A/2, Hyperdyne sought protection and relocated to the world of Alexandria in the Central Space Consortium to continue working on their "more-human-than-human" approach to the synthetic.[4]

Rebellion[]

In 2147, the CSC's parent government, the Three World Empire, demanded that Hyperdyne submit to an Interstellar Commerce Commission investigation[2] concerning the 120-A/2 synthetics series. In response, Hyperdyne declared its independence from the 3WE and, as the latter was reluctant to ravage Alexandria in a civil war, it declined to retaliate. In 2148, a number of company-owned colonies of the CSC followed Hyperdyne's lead, sparking the Core Conflict. While initially supportive of their long-distance colonies in the Hyades Cluster, Hyperdyne was more concerned with its own security in the Core, and proceeded to limit supply runs. This effectively left Hyperdyne's colonies without food or support, with a blockade imposed by the United Americas Allied Command complicating matters. After two years of war, Hyperdyne and other companies in the CSC agreed to talk with the UA and 3WE and, a year later, all members of the Core Conflict signed a UNISC agreement with the ICC dubbed the "'51 New Deal". The newly minted Independent Core System Colonies was granted independence from the 3WE, and all investigations into Hyperdyne were dropped by the ICC. 2156, however, saw the Hyades Cluster's secession to the Union of Progressive Peoples, and Hyperdyne lobbied for the United Americas to intervene despite the 20 Parsec Limit, forcing the United States Colonial Marine Corps to engage the UPP until the '65 ceasefire.[5]

Affiliation with UPP and buy-out[]

Amid the Hyades Revolt, meanwhile, Hyperdyne seized an opportunity and began to secretly support the UPP in hopes of being awarded the title of "state enterprise".[6] While this gambit resulted in success, some corporate worlds were caught applying for ICSC status in American territories, and the United Americas imposed new trade embargoes and blockades against the ICSC. Resultantly, a number of corporate contracts were revoked as the USCM reclaimed those worlds and escorted the companies responsible out of the sector, granting production control of the reclaimed colonies to Weyland-Yutani. To avoid bankruptcy, Hyperdyne was forced to sell its major shares to Weyland-Yutani, and thus become a subsidiary.[7]

Independence once again[]

In 2171, Hyperdyne released the 341-B synthetic model for the USCM,[7] though it was the ensuing success of the Frontier Revolver[6] that lent Hyperdyne sufficient clout to regain the majority shares needed to buy back its independence from Weyland-Yutani, and once again become a power in its own right. Weyland-Yutani managed to retain the 341-B's designer, Michael Bishop.[7] During the Linna 349 Campaign fought between 2174 and 2175, Hyperdyne was suspected by United Americas Intelligence of having supplied a rebel faction on Linna 349 with upgraded weaponry, though this was never conclusively proven.[8]

Berserker Project[]

In the 2180s Hyperdyne executive Spencer Lyndon developed the MOX unit, a weaponized and enclosed exosuit, for the clandestine cabal Deep Void's Project Life Force.[9] However in 2184, after Deep Void was exposed following a USCM operation on Pandora, Hyperdyne's lawyers tried to bargain with the Marines Corps to develop Berserkers for Marine service to avoid prosecution for their involvement with Deep Void.[10]

Benoist-Henderson Station incident[]

In the mid-2180s, the Benoist-Henderson Station fuel depot in the Kappa Reticuli System was destroyed. Hyperdyne and Weyland-Yutani blamed each other for the destruction, with the former declaring that one of Weyland-Yutani's bioweapons was responsible and the latter retorting that the station was sabotaged by Hyperdyne mercenaries.[6]

A unique approach to weapon production[]

After the '65 ceasefire, having proven itself essential to the Union of Progressive Peoples and become a state enterprise, Hyperdyne introduced a new approach to weapon production. Aware that few colonies in the Hyades Cluster had heavy industry, and that many were short on freighters but equipped with commercial fabricators, Hyperdyne produced weapon blueprints that could be transmitted over FTL hyperstate and "printed" with common materials. Hyperdyne hired DT-57 Medved shotgun designer Sophia Tamarkina as the lead designer of the small arms division, with the first request being to design a small arm for Frontier colonists and militias. By 2171, Hyperdyne released its first "3D Printed" weapon, the Frontier Revolver, and would garner renown for sturdy but reliable weapons such as the EVI-87 Zvezda Plasma Rifle, the OCAP-91 Volcan flamethrower, the Microburst, and the Twinhammer. Hyperdyne also released versions of existing weapons such as the DT-57 Medved, the PPZ-49 Vol, the Rapid Responder, the AM-16 Gruppa, and the Twilight v.4.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

The company's name, first mentioned in Aliens, is something of an inside joke referencing Cyberdyne Systems, the company responsible for creating the Terminator cyborgs and the Skynet artificial intelligence system in the Terminator franchise, the first 2 films of which were directed and partially written by Aliens director James Cameron.[11] In fact, the company's name, which first appeared in the February 26, 1985 first draft of the film's script, was originally "Cyberdyne Systems",[12] but it had been changed to Hyperdyne by the September 23, 1985 final draft.[13]

  1. "Hyperdyne Systems" is the correct spelling according to to the September 23, 1985 final draft of the film's script. Also confirmed by the RPG.
