"What we have here is in essence a rogue male. He's a living engine of destruction."
Kleist, regarding the Rogue (from Aliens: Rogue)

The Rogue, also referred to as the Usurper, Chimera or "King" Alien, was a human/Xenomorph hybrid genetically engineered by Professor Ernst Kleist as part of Project Chimera. The final product of Kleist's research, the Rogue was intended to act as a control mechanism — a tame equivalent of a Xenomorph Queen that could be controlled by man, and could in turn be used to control other Xenomorphs. Instead the creature proved to be ferociously aggressive towards natural Xenomorphs, and would go on to challenge the Queen kept at Charon Base, a contest that the Rogue ultimately lost.

"Isn't he a wonderful creature, Mr. Cray? One of the greatest of all creation, don't you think?"
Kleist to Cray, regarding the Rogue (from Aliens: Rogue)

The Rogue was the final product of the gene splicing experiments being carried out by Professor Kleist at Charon Base under Project Chimera. Although Kleist had achieved significant success genetically engineering tame Drone hybrids, he encountered severe setbacks when attempting to create a hybrid Queen, including many attempts that were born horribly deformed, eventually perishing as a result of their mutations.[3] The breakthrough came when Kleist incorporated human DNA in the hybridization process, using genetic material taken from John Cray. The result was the Rogue, an enormous and hugely powerful male Xenomorph "king" that it was hoped would act as a tame counterpart to naturally-occurring Queens.

Kleist's insistence that the Rogue would be tame appeared vindicated when it refrained from harming Cray, who was placed in the creature's cell stripped and bound to a chair. However, the truth behind the Rogue's nature was revealed when several natural Xenomorph Drones were also let into the containment chamber; far from being docile or exerting some form of calming control over the Drones, the Rogue flew into a rage and savagely attacked them, effortlessly tearing them to pieces. This led to Kleist concluding that the only reason the Rogue ignored Cray was because he posed no threat.

Rampage and destruction[]

The Rogue's extreme hostility towards other Xenomorphs proved disastrous for the inhabitants of Charon Base when the creature made contract with the Queen overseeing the nearby Hive. The two apparently challenged each other to some form of contest for supremacy, causing the Rogue to become enraged further still, and Kleist's creation immediately smashed its way out of its cell and began rampaging through the base, seeking the Queen. Although not actively attacking humans at the base, the Rogue slaughtered any that got in its way, and eventually smashed through the sealed airlock into the Hive, allowing the Xenomorphs within to swarm the civilian facility.

After dispatching the Queen's royal guard, the Rogue engaged the Queen in combat, but was eventually defeated. Kleist later attacks the Queen in retaliation for the death of his creation, but is wounded. As he bleeds, he mourns over the corpse of the Rogue before self-destructing.

Information[]

In the book of the same name, the Rogue, while believed to be more powerful than the Queen, the scientist was shocked to find the Queen was in fact the superior specimen. While the Rogue was larger and stronger, the Queen's superior speed and intelligence enabled her to easily dodge the Rogue's brutish attacks while she slowly wore it down and finally slaughtered it. The scientist, Ernst Kleist, was subsequently killed when he used a sound cannon on the Queen until it went critical, destroying the asteroid base he was on. The Rogue was seemingly much more aggressive and mercilessly attacked the smaller castes of Aliens. This is illustrated when Professor Kleist discovered the crushed corpses of the elite Praetorian guards of the Queen.

Characteristics[]

Interestingly, unlike other Xenomorphs, the Rogue would ignore other live organisms (namely humans) depending on how much of a threat they posed. This may be due to a Rogue caste not having a sense to use humans to breed as the Queen caste. The Rogue's recklessness (or rather indifference towards humans) was shown when it destroyed the barrier that separated the Xenomorph sector and the Human sector, thus allowing Xenomorph Drones to pour into the human sector.

Trivia[]

  • Kenner Products produced a King Alien as part of their Aliens toy line. More recently, Sideshow Collectibles also released an 'Alien King' maquette, though neither product bares any resemblance to the creature in the comic.
