Alien (2011 Blu-ray)

Alien Blu-ray cover.

The 2011 Blu-ray release of Alien contained both the original 1979 theatrical cut and the 2003 Director's Cut of Alien in high-definition, along with several bonus features. Essentially, the single disc is simply the first disc from the 2010 Alien Anthology Blu-ray set released as a separate package. As such, it contains the same bonus features, with the exception of the Alien Anthology's MU-TH-UR Mode interactive experience and corresponding Weyland-Yutani Datastream.

The Blu-ray was released on May 10, 2011 in the United States and Canada,[1] alongside the corresponding Blu-ray releases of Aliens, Alien3 and Alien Resurrection. In the United Kingdom, the four Blu-ray sets were released simultaneously on January 30, 2012.[2] The UK edition was later repacked (complete with its case) as part of the 2012 Alien Anthology set.

Contents[]

*The deleted and extended scenes found on the disc are in fact merely the additional scenes added in the Director's Cut, available for viewing separately. This means some of these scenes have been edited from the originally filmed version.

Trivia[]

The image used on the cover.

  • The image of the Alien on the Blu-ray's cover art is actually a modified version of a well-known production image from the film (the original of which can be seen to the right). The same image was previously used as the basis for the cover art of the 2004 Alien3 DVD issued in America.
  • The 2011 Alien series Blu-rays represent the first time home video releases of the films used the same cover art in both North America and the UK. Previously, the two territories invariably utilized alternative images for their local VHS/DVD releases.
