Green Lantern versus Aliens

Green Lantern versus Aliens is a four-issue limited crossover comic book series that was first published by DC Comics and Dark Horse Comics from September-December 2000. It was written by Ron Marz, pencilled by Rick Leonardi, inked by Mike Perkins, colored by David Stewart, lettered by Steve Dutro, and edited by Philip Amara, Bob Schreck, Tim Ervin-Gore and Frank Berrios, with cover art by Dwayne Turner.

In the overall Dark Horse crossover comics line, Green Lantern versus Aliens was preceded by Aliens versus Predator versus The Terminator and Superman vs. Predator, and was was followed by Witchblade/Aliens/Darkness/Predator: Mindhunter.

Publisher's Summary[]

#1: Hal Jordan patrolled the spaceways in the name of cosmic justice as one of the greatest Green Lanterns to ever don the legendary power ring. In a never-before-told chapter of Hal's adventures, he faces and defeats the universe's ultimate killing machines: the dreaded Aliens. At the battle's end, Hal chose to "contain" their evil, rather than exterminate the creatures. Now it's years later, and Kyle Rayner has inherited Hal's duties — as well as responsibility for some of Hal's "unfinished business." As Kyle and some former members of the GL Corps struggle to save a planet from the acid-dripping beasts, he has a sinking feeling that this is a war with no chance for a happy ending.

#2: Kyle Rayner, inheritor of the Green Lantern legacy, is called to action by a group of former Green Lantern Corps members to rescue a star freighter that has crashed on an Alien-plagued world — the same world visited by GL Hal Jordan a decade earlier. This could prove to be Kyle's greatest challenge to date: not just in defeating this near-unstoppable menace, but in forcing Kyle to face his own fears and weaknesses. Is a good man with one power ring enough to destroy a planet-wide infestation of Aliens? And if so, can he live with himself afterwards?

#3: A Green Lantern with his ring just might be able to fend off a vile, festering, numberless horde of Aliens — but without the ring? This is exactly what Kyle Rayner is up against, and from the looks of his battered body and tattered GL uniform, things don't look good. There are ex-GL Corps members by his side — for what good it'll do against unstoppable killing machines with acid for blood! Problem is, if Kyle and company survive the Aliens, something else is waiting for them — something bigger, something deadlier — something exactly like an Alien queen!

#4: It comes down to this: Kyle Rayner's got his power ring back, and he'll need it as he goes up against the mother of all Aliens... literally! But is the awesome power of the ring enough to defeat an Alien Queen? And how will Kyle end the Alien menace for good? Will he take the "noble" path of his predecessor, Hal Jordan, and uphold the sanctity of life that all GLs share? Or will Kyle take more drastic steps to eliminate the creatures? And if so, can he live with the consequences?

Green Lantern versus Aliens was collected in a trade paperback edition released in July 2001, edited by Amara and Schreck and featuring a new cover by artist Eric Kohler.

The story was collected again as part of the Dark Horse Comics/DC Comics: Justice League Volume 2 trade paperback, released on March 21, 2017. The release reused the cover art from JLA versus Predator by Graham Nolan and Randy Elliott.

Behind the Scenes[]

Green Lantern was the third DC Comics superhero to be featured in a cross-over with the Aliens/Predator comics lines, following Batman and Superman. As DC's well-known interplanetary, space-faring hero, Green Lantern was perhaps the most fitting choice for a cross-over out of the DC pantheon.
