The Benelli Super 90 is an Italian-made semi-automatic shotgun chambered for 12 gauge cartridges. It is available in several versions for civilian, law enforcement and military use, and features the proprietary Benelli recoil system, known for its reliability and easy maintenance.

Overview[]

The Super 90 is primarily used by police and military forces, although civilian versions also exist. The weapons are known for their reliable and easy-to-maintain operating mechanism. Their primary drawback is that this mechanism is semi-auto only, which makes it less reliable when firing weaker cartridges, such as less-than-lethal or beanbag rounds.

The M4 Super 90, although externally similar to the earlier M1, M2 and M3 models, incorporates a completely new internal mechanism designed to specifications provided by the United States Marine Corps. The M4 is in use with both the US military and the British Armed Forces.

Notable Users[]

Mike Harrigan used an M1 Super 90 "Entry" with a cut-down barrel, pistol grip, and laser sight whenever he needed increased firepower. He notably used it when confronting the City Hunter inside the Los Angeles slaughterhouse. The weapon was subsequently destroyed by the City Hunter, which smashed it effortlessly with its bare hands.

Behind the Scenes[]

In Aliens: Colonial Marines, the M4 Super 90 serves as the basis for the MK221 Tactical Shotgun. The MK221 was initially supposed to be an M4 Super 90, but the name was changed and the weapon slightly modified for the release version.

In Prometheus, crew members aboard the USCSS Prometheus are armed with shotguns based on the Benelli M3T Super 90; as with the Walther GSP pistols in the film, the blue CGI muzzle flashes imply that they are some kind of energy-based weapon rather than traditional shotguns. Jackson also uses one when facing the Last Engineer.
