Derek Thompson is an American comic book artist who has worked on several comic books in Dark Horse Comics' Aliens, Predator and Aliens vs. Predator lines. Thompson's first involvement with the lines came as the fan-favorite artist on the gory and action-packed series Predator: Bad Blood, as well as its prequel short story, which he drew before he had even graduated from art college.
Originally from Atlanta, Thompson has tended to specialize on monsters in his artwork. He also works on personal and abstract paintings.
Like fellow early Aliens vs. Predator artist, Phill Norwood, Thompson eventually made a transition from comics art to a career in movie storyboarding conceptual artwork. After college, he went to work for powerhouse special effects company ILM, working on such films as Men in Black II and the special edition release of Return of the Jedi among others. He left ILM to pursue freelance work in 2000. He was eventually hired as a conceptual and storyboard artist at Skywalker Ranch by Lucasfilm where he got to work as a storyboard/concept artist on Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
Continuing to work freelance, Thompson has also worked as an artist in the video game design field, on the animated series X-Men: Evolution, and continues to work on comics projects, such as the self-published Bindu done with fellow Predator/AVP-contributor writer Brian McDonald.
He currently resides in California.
