Dark Horse Digital
|Major activities:||Digital comic book publisher|
Dark Horse Digital is a subsidiary of Dark Horse Comics responsible for the publication of comic books in the digital format. It was established in 2011. Dark Horse Digital began as an online digital comics store and associated iOS app, with an Android app released in 2012. Any device with a modern web browser functionality can be used to read Dark Horse comic books via Dark Horse Digital's web store.
Since the Fire and Stone crossover event in 2014, all of Dark Horse's new Aliens, Predator, Aliens vs. Predator and Prometheus comics have had simultaneous digital releases through Dark Horse Digital. Prior to this, a handful of other new stories and much of the company's Aliens, Predator and Aliens vs. Predator back catalogue was also made available digitally.
The first Aliens/Predator/Aliens vs. Predator comic to see a digital release was Aliens: Inhuman Condition, made available as part of the relevant issues of Dark Horse Presents, which has been published simultaneously in both physical and digital formats since June 2011. Following this, Dark Horse began releasing digital copies of the franchises' back catalogue from October 2012 onwards.
As with the Omnibus releases from several years previously, the back catalogue collection of Aliens, Predator and Aliens vs. Predator comics available through Dark Horse Digital is not utterly exhaustive and a number of stories, chiefly from the Aliens line, have not been made available digitally. Most notably, the numerous non-canon crossover comics that introduced the Xenomorphs and Yautja to other comic book franchises have not been made available. However, several more recent comic books published after the Omnibus releases were produced (and therefore not included in them) are available digitally, including the Alien vs. Predator film tie-in comics Alien vs. Predator: Thrill of the Hunt and Alien vs. Predator: Civilized Beasts, and the 2009 re-launch series Aliens: More Than Human, Predator: Prey to the Heavens and Aliens vs. Predator: Three World War.
Dark Horse Comics titles that have not be published digitally include Aliens: Countdown, Aliens: Tribes, Aliens: Renegade, Alien3: Terminal Addiction, Operation: Aliens, Predators, Predators: Preserve the Game and the film adaptations Aliens: Newt's Tale, Alien3, Alien Resurrection, Predator 2 and Predators: Beating the Bullet. Also unavailable in the digital format are the non-canon Aliens: Space Marines mini-comics, the incomplete series Aliens: Crusade, and the graphic novel Aliens: Matrix, which was never published.
