Publisher's Summary Edit

Buffy has never needed a vacation from Slaying so badly as she does now. With the world overrun with zompires and other fallout from Season 8, longtime pal Spike has got the perfect solution — a "spacecation" where she can get some respite from all things that go bump in the night... like giant bloodthirsty space bug-pires!

Reprint HistoryEdit

In Space No One Can Hear You Slay! was collected in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9, Vol. 2 trade paperback, released in December 2012.

The short was collected again as part of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9, Vol. 1 hardcover Library Edition trade paperback, published in January 2015.

Behind the Scenes Edit

Aside from the presence of a Xenomorph, the story includes many references to the film Alien. For example, the first panel of the story shows Buffy sporting a white tank-top and hiding between two white space suits, an obvious nod to the scene where Ripley hides from the Alien inside a locker aboard the Narcissus. The story continues with Buffy lighting her way through the dark halls of her spacecraft using a blowtorch created from a lighter and a can of bug spray — this is both reminiscent of Ripley moving through the Nostromo's corridors with her flamethrower, as well as a possible nod to the term "bug hunt" from Aliens. The story ends with Buffy trapped in the ship's solarium with the fang-toothed Xenomorph, at which point Buffy slams her fist down on a control panel, opening the ship's window shields and exposing the creature to the sun, effectively turning it to dust, revealing it to have been crossbred with a vampire. The sequence of Buffy killing the creature is very similar to the moment where Ripley jettisons the Alien from the Narcissus in a similar fashion.

While none of the crossover comics are considered canon with regards to the Aliens/Predator/Alien vs. Predator franchises, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: In Space No One Can hear You Slay! is one of a select few that forms an official, canonical part of the other comic book franchise involved. Other examples that are likewise considered canon in their parent series include Predator versus Judge Dredd, Agents of Law #6, Judge Dredd versus Aliens: Incubus and WildC.A.T.s/Aliens. However, none of these comics are considered canon in the Alien, Predator and Alien vs. Predator franchise.

  • In Space No One Can Hear You Slay! is not the only story to feature a vampire/Xeno crossbreed. Aliens/Vampirella would go on to showcase a Xenomorph Queen born of Vampirella herself, and which is correspondingly bestowed with vampire traits such as wings and fanged teeth.
