Alien 2 takes place during the time period between Aliens and Alien 3. In this backstory, it is learned that Aliens have been successfully cloned and grown secretly on Earth for military purposes. One of the laboratory animals impreganted with a xenomorph escapes and results in the release of a xenomorph into the public in village near Costa Rica where the lab had been located. Once discovered missing, it is feared the animal will release a xenomorph into the village so a special military force is called in to find and exterminate the Alien and prevent its discovery by civilians.
