Alan Dean Foster (born November 18, 1946) is an American writer of fantasy and science fiction who wrote the novelizations of Alien, Aliens, Alien3 and Alien: Covenant, as well as the novel Alien: Covenant - Origins. Foster is a prolific creator of and contributor to book series as well as the author of more than 20 single novels. He is especially prolific in his novelizations of film scripts; aside from the Alien films, he has written the novelizations in the Star Trek, Star Wars, Terminator and Transformers franchises.

Biography[]

After the Disney buyout of the Star Wars franchise, Foster stopped receiving royalty payments for his first two published novels in the franchise. Following Disney's purchase of 20th Century Fox, the same thing happened with his royalties for the first three Alien film novelizations. Foster then enlisted the help of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Grievance Committee to fix the dispute. Over a year later, the SFWA finally went public with the dispute, claiming that Disney's view of the matter was that it had purchased the rights but not the obligations of the properties that came with the properties' respective contracts. In a live video press conference, a representative of A.C. Crispin reached out with similar concerns over royalty payments owed for her work on the Alien: Resurection novelization.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Among the films novelised by Foster are Darkstar, which was written by Alien co-writer Dan O'Bannon, and Outland, which has frequently been compared to Alien due to it's remarkably similar aesthetic and comparable themes.
